Hair loss in ladies is one of the leading reasons for low self-esteem and depression. Thinning hair is a norm for women as they grow older. It is especially prominent as they reach menopause. However, male or female pattern baldness is a different issue. Female pattern baldness (FPB) is because of excess shading. According to research, women with FPB might lose between 49-99 hairs daily.
Male pattern baldness and FPB might be similar in name but do not share the same characteristics. For example, women tend to lose hair in a different pattern than men. With Female Pattren Baldness, hair loss begins at the crown of the head. With male pattern baldness, hair loss begins from the hairline. The good news is women rarely go completely bald. Nevertheless, the thinning hair leaves an uncomfortable feeling.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF FPB?
Baldness in women can be because of many factors. Female pattern baldness is usually led by an endocrine state or a hormone-secreting tumor.Several bases cause female pattern baldness:
As women grow older and at the ripe old age of 40, hair loss is certain. Researchers have proven that more than half of women above the age of 40 will suffer from baldness. Female Pattern Baldness magnifies the situation creating a thinner look.
Male or female pattern baldness has a direct relationship to genetics. If you have a family member that has suffered from the same, you are likely to experience the same, especially if it is a parent.
Certain meds may cause baldness. Birth control pills and immune suppressive drugs are some of the medications that can cause baldness in women.
High Levels of Androgen
Androgens are hormones that give and maintain male physical traits. If there is an overproduction of this hormone, it will lead to baldness in women.
Symptoms of FPB
Both male or female pattern baldness can display certain symptoms. Although both relate to hair loss, they manifest in different ways. ,While in men, most cases start from the hairline, baldness in women starts from the crown. Fortunately, women do not have to suffer the embarrassment of complete baldness. Another symptom is the shrinkage of hair. With FPB, the hair part becomes wider and the overall volume of the hair shrinks. As baldness progresses, the hair follicles shrink in size, affecting the hair and size.
Treatment of FPB
Treating baldness in women depends on several factors. There is no straightforward way to treat male or female pattern baldness. However, there are several ways to manage FPB. We say management because female pattern baldness cannot be treated, at least not completely.
Medication is one of the leading ways of treating FPB. One of the most recommended medications for hair restoration therapy is Minoxidil. A solution comes in 2% and 5%. Minoxidil treats male or female pattern baldness. This solution is usually applied to the scalp to encourage hair growth. Although some doctors recommend the 5% solution, research has shown some undesired side effects, such as hair growth in unintended areas. Minoxidil can be used together with other drugs for the best results.
There is little evidence to suggest that FPB is caused by hormonal imbalance. However, doctors can sometimes recommend a patient to use hormonal therapy to induce and maintain hair growth. Using contraceptives is one of the most common hormonal therapies. In cases where androgen is the main cause of baldness in women, this is the best treatment.
Surgery is also an option, and it yields better results. The general idea of surgery or hair transplant is to harvest healthy hairs from the scalp. This is usually the back or sides of the head. This hair is transplanted to the recipient zone. Surgery treats male or female pattern baldness. There are two forms of hair transplant. Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
Prevention of FPB
As stated before, women lose their hair at some point in their life. This is especially true when they are approaching or during menopause. Preventing baldness in women is a tall order. However, you can maintain a healthy mane by doing the following:
- Have a healthy diet. Eating healthy is not just about the body but the hair as well. If the hair has a healthy appearance, hair loss will not be visible.
- Avoid nicotine. Smoking affects your health as well as that of your hair.
- Be keen with the medication you use. Some medications can cause hair loss. Make assured you are not allergic to any of them.
As much as female pattern baldness causes discomfort to those affected, baldness in women does not have to be permanent. It is best to visit a qualified doctor for the best diagnosis. Self-diagnosis leads to misdiagnosis. It is also a great idea to keep a healthy regimen.
