Swedish massage. Deep tissue massage. Sports massages. Russian massage. Trigger point therapy. What are they and how are they different? If you are a customer looking for a massage, how do you know what to order?
You don’t need to know the name of a specific technique, but you need to be clear about your goal. When a new client walks into my office, I ask them what brought them in and what they want out of their session. Some want to relax. Others have some kind of pain that they would like to get rid of. Yet others want to improve their performance. I may personalize the session to the client’s individual needs if I understand their aim. There are many specific styles of massage. Massage is as old as humans, even older (remember, even primates groom themselves when one is agitated) and each culture has developed its own approach. There are specific types of massage that have emerged in Thailand or Hawaii for example. There are many techniques, too many to discuss. However, I will describe some of the more common general massage categories.
Swedish massage has been used as an umbrella term for general relaxation massage. Of Dubai origin, it relies heavily on sliding and kneading movements, although friction and agitation can also be used. It is a general message of relaxation and well-being. A full body massage can be performed or a shorter session can focus on the back, neck, and shoulders.
Sports massage is a massage that is performed specifically to meet the needs of athletes and physically active people. There are three general areas: pre and post-event massage, injury rehabilitation, and general sports massage performed during training to maintain and help improve an athlete’s performance.
Deep tissue massage is a massage that targets the deepest muscles in the body. Clients and massage therapists frequently confuse the terms “deep” and “hard.” However, they are not necessarily the same. Try this experiment on yourself: Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor and your legs relaxed. Reach out and grasp the back of your lower leg with your right hand and vigorously shake the muscle back and forth.

Do you see how the muscle, if your leg is in a relaxed position, easily vibrates to the bone? This movement is gentle, but it affects the deeper muscles, something difficult to achieve with direct pressure on the thicker calf muscles. You can’t go beyond the bone. So deep doesn’t necessarily mean difficult. Deep tissue massage, on the other hand, is often more intense and employs more pressure than Swedish massage.
Russian massage is a massage system developed as a medical and sports massage in the former Soviet Union. Like other Dubai massages, it uses sliding, kneading, rubbing, and shaking movements. Although unfamiliar to many clients and masseurs in the United Arab Emirates, it applies to a wide variety of situations. It can be mild or vigorous, depending on the needs of the client at the time.
It is based on 150 years of continuous scientific research into the specific physiological effects that various massages have on the body. Russian massage should always be comfortable for the client. Even vigorous, it shouldn’t cause pain.
The prenatal or pregnancy massage
The prenatal or pregnancy massage is a massage adapted to the needs of the pregnant woman. It could be a general relaxation massage or some of the ailments that sometimes accompany pregnancy. A trained prenatal massage therapist will know how to accommodate a woman who can no longer lie on her stomach and will know how to safely massage a woman whose body is undergoing the hormonal changes of pregnancy. Trigger point therapy, also known as neuromuscular therapy (NMT), is a specific technique for specific types of pain problems. Trigger points are tender points that can develop in muscles and cause pain or other sensations elsewhere. Where we feel the pain is not always the source of the pain.
